Overview
Dow Jones Indexes offers a unique series of indexes based on actual transactions in the energy, steel and recovered paper and steel industries. Collectively known as the Dow Jones Transaction Based Indexes℠, the family includes U.S. Electricity Price Indexes, European Energy, Recovered Paper and Steel Indexes.
Dow Jones Transaction Based Indexes℠ are industry-wide benchmarks that help participants gauge price risks. The information provided by these wholesale indexes has also been used in the creation of an active futures market for the electricity and steel industries.
The Dow Jones U.S. Electricity Price Indexes℠ are volume-weighted averages of wholesale electricity transactions. Calculations for these indexes average power transactions from specific geographic areas. Each index provides a clear spot market indication for OTC trading in that region.

Calculations for these indexes average power transactions from specific geographic areas. Each index provides a clear spot market indication for OTC trading in that region.
The Dow Jones European Energy Indexes℠ currently include four electricity indexes and one natural gas index:
- Dow Jones French Power Index℠
- Dow Jones German Power Index℠
- Dow Jones Swiss Electricity Price Index℠
- Dow Jones Zeebrugge Index℠ for Natural Gas
The Dow Jones Recovered Paper Indexes℠ are volume-weighted measures of monthly transactions. The indexes were created with the assistance of the Recovered paper Index Advisory Board (RPIAB), whose members include leaders from the paper, recycling and financial industries. The Board's primary role is to advise Dow Jones Indexes on index methodology and industry practices that could impact the index process. The indexes track markets in the Midwest, New England, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southwest, Pacific Northwest, Northern California and Southern California.

The Dow Jones Steel Indexes℠ for Hot Rolled Coils and the Dow Jones Steel Indexes℠ for Cold Rolled Coils are transaction-based, volume-weighted measures of the U.S. steel prices. The Dow Jones Steel Indexes℠ were created with the assistance of the Steel Index Advisory Board (SIAB). The methodology was developed to create a reliable, accurate and independent price gauges for the steel industry that can be used for price discovery and/or closing of futures contracts in the secondary market.
To help ensure the indexes are comparable over time, Dow Jones Indexes established the following reporting criteria as a guide:
Hot-Rolled Coils
- Includes all prime (non-plate) tons shipped in the indicated month
- Transaction Price:
- FOB Mill
- Spot Transaction/Base Price for Coils Shipped in the Indicated Month
- Average Transaction/Base Price for Coils Shipped in the Indicated Month
- Excluding Extras
- Including Surcharges
Cold-Rolled Coils
- Includes all prime fully processed tons shipped in the indicated month
- Transaction Price:
- FOB Mill
- Spot Transaction/Base Price for Coils Shipped in the Indicated Month
- Average Transaction/Base Price for Coils Shipped in the Indicated Month
- Excluding Extras
- Including Surcharges
